Entrepreneurship: My thoughts
- Keith Johnson
We live in uncertain and definitely volatile times – to say the least. The financial markets and job markets are extremely unstable and now the U.S. Government has to step into the “free market” and offer a little bit of support to perhaps keep the international economies afloat. Things change in life, but I foresee a period ahead where things will be changing perhaps drastically, don’t you agree?
If there is any time to embrace the “spirit of entrepreneurship” it is now. Why do I say this? Because traditional solutions to problems of the past might not work anymore. People are no longer satisfied with traditional approaches to problems, and they seek new and more dynamic ways of looking at problems and solving them.
For the Technical Writer or Publications Professional, this is no exception. People will be wanting to see improvements in their information and content, and so it is your job as a writer to ask better questions and get better info before you start writing or blogging. The other night Martha Stewart featured a few well-known bloggers on her weeknight evening show and asked them what made them successful. They all said that they see themselves as entrepreneurs and that they try to use creative approaches to their writing and presentation of information, away from traditional approaches. These men and women were well aware of the many-thousands of other blogs on the web, but due to their perseverance and also dedication to writing creatively, they have been able to rise to the top and keep a strong readership.
As the U.S. economy and related international markets make necessary adjustments to continue ahead, those individuals who embrace the “spirit of entrepreneurship” will surely well. So, whether you are a Technical Writer, or blogger, or have another profession that involves writing, my message to you is to not be afraid to introduce change into your work. If you see areas you can improve, bring it up with your boss or supervisor or client. Surely, they will be glad to see that you are concerned about the quality of your work and that you are not afraid to let go of inferior ways of writing and presenting your ideas and ready to embrace newer and more-thought-out ways that will positively impact those who will be reading your great documents and/or publications.
Good luck to you.
