Part III: Web 2.0 – the new wave of cool and practical Internet tools

In 1992, when Bill Clinton ran for the president, there were about 50 websites that mentioned his candidacy. Today, that number for a Presidential candidate would be in millions. With over 1.4 billion people online, the world wide web has become a large hub for global commerce, social networking and innovation. The web has also become the most democratic communication tool ever known to the humankind. With a minimal investment, people from around the world can now communicate, collaborate and make tremendous impact on various causes.

The new breed of entrepreneurs see this as a great opportunity – and developing many practical online tools as we speak – that they are calling Web 2.0 companies.

When I attended business school in 2001, there was a big hype on how dot com companies would change the way people lived their lives. Most of the companies over promised and under delivered at the end. That was then. Welcome to the future of the Internet! web 2.0! – where practical and cool services are emerging and people are actually using them.

Eventful – is a perfect example of an emerging web 2.0 company that allows end-users to take the lead in demanding and getting the events such as concerts and political rallies that they want at the places they want. This is a true Web 2.0 application where users get to create the content. The upside for the organizers is that they get an idea on the types of turnout they can expect. One of the groups with Eventful had 57,609 people demanding a Barack Obama rally in their home town.

Some other useful Web 2.0 tools include:

twitter, timedriver, everyblock, flickr, stumbleupon, revver, flexcar, hipcal, sixapart, vizu, Gcast, skobee, quicktoons, ksolo, work, grandcentral
